What Got You Here… Ain’t Gonna Get You There!

What got you here… Ain’t going to get you there in the Automotive Industry

[Video Transcription]:  What I mean by that, well you’ve heard me say it before, I don’t believe there’s been a better time to actually own an auto repair shop than right now. Shop owners are hitting that magical million dollar mark in record numbers right now. They’re taking advantage of this great opportunity we have right now. And if you’ve been watching it you’ve been beating your head against the wall and wondering how come that isn’t happening for you. Well chances are it’s probably something pretty darn obvious.] I may be talking about you know maybe what Captain Obvious might be talking about right now. And it’s because you’re doing the same things that got you to where you are right now and expecting you to get to the next level with them.

You’re probably working as hard as you possibly can. You’re probably working as many hours. You know you can’t possibly work more hours. Maybe your staff or technicians your service advisers whoever is on your team is working at capacity. They’re running around like chickens with their heads cut off and you’ve exhausted all the knowledge base that you have. You know everything you’re doing everything you know to do in order to get you to that next level. And it’s just not happening for you.

Well that’s because what got you here ain’t going to get you there. It’s a matter of doing things differently. If you want to get the different results. So for example, if you exhausted your knowledge base in other words you’ve done everything you possibly know in order to get you to the next level. Well obvious you should get more knowledge you should learn some new things some new techniques. Maybe it’s a matter of installing some new systems in your shop. Maybe it’s a matter of learning how to sell better. So you take advantage of the cars that are coming to you. Maybe it’s a matter of learning better marketing better marketing techniques you know a lot of people say well I’m doing everything I know to get cars in a shop. Exactly. OK. You’re doing everything you know. It’s time to learn more.

It’s time to take advantage of all these new marketing techniques that are out there and look as you know I’m known as Captain car count so I know there’s a lot of opportunities out there that you’re probably not taking advantage of when it comes to marketing. So if that’s the thing that’s holding you back. Well it’s time to make a change. It’s time to do something different because what got you here ain’t going to get you there. OK so if you need the more car count if you need to make more sales let’s say you’re getting plenty of cars coming in the door but the sales just aren’t going up.

Maybe the more cars you get in the more your sales go down. Well that’s either systems problem. It might be a sales technique problem. There could be a lot of different things but the problem is if you keep doing the same things over and over and over you’re gonna keep getting those same results. So it’s time to do something different because what got you here ain’t going to get you there you’re going to hear me saying that a lot on this quick video because that’s really what you need to change.

Try Something Different in Your Auto Repair Shop

You need to do things differently or do more of those things. So you know maybe your team is working at capacity. You had a couple of techs out there two or three techs out there. They’re working as hard as they possibly can. And you’re still not able to turn out enough work. Well where is the problem. Well maybe it’s in your your customer flow it’s in your the systems you have in a shop maybe that the people that got you here are not going to be able to work fast enough or quick enough or do the quality work you’re looking for in order to get you there. So it’s time to make a change. OK. Because what got you here that team got you to where you’re at right now but if they’re not working quick enough if they’re not working efficiently enough you’ve you’ve either got to change the team or you’ve got to change the system or change the training that you’re giving them because if you want to get there you can’t keep doing everything that only got you to where you’re at right now.

Same thing with your profits. If you’re not netting at the end of the week 20 cents out of every dollar that came through the door isn’t going directly in your pocket as the owner because you’re putting your blood sweat and tears in this and you do deserve to get paid more. If that’s not happening for you and it’s not happening for the overwhelming majority of shop owners you’ve got to do something different.

It’s a knowledge thing. It’s a maybe it’s the sales maybe you’re not making enough profit on the sales that maybe this sale not enough sales are being made. Again what got you here ain’t going to get you there so you’ve got to make those difficult things that take those difficult actions and make those difficult decisions with the personnel or investing in a coach or or finally taking action on the knowledge you have. You’ve got to do those things. Look I know change is different. Difficult. It’s it’s difficult for everybody. But again if you want to get there you’ve got to do something different because we’ve got you here the knowledge the team the the systems the amount of hours you’re putting in the blood sweat and tears everything you’re doing right now with your current situation has got you to where you’re at right now.

It ain’t going to get you there. So I’ll say it one final time… What got you here, ain’t going to get you there. It’s time to do something different.
